On July 24, 2023, Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, unveiled the new Twitter logo, an "X" made of two intersecting lines — announcing the new logo generated broad social media buzz.

However, as with many new releases, a viral image that caught many people's attention claimed that "The Simpsons" show, a famous American animated sitcom, had predicted the "X" logo years before its official release.

Social Media Posts

A purported picture from "The Simpsons" has been circulating online, claiming that the show predicted the "X" logo that Elon Musk unveiled in the recent Twitter rebranding. To highlight this point, an "X" symbolled app icon can be seen on a mobile phone held by one of the characters in “The Simpsons” show.

The same claims were shared among Twitter users as well.

However, this image was altered, and the "X" logo didn't appear on The Simpsons.

Fact-Checking

To get to the bottom of the claim that "The Simpsons" had predicted the new Twitter logo years before its official release, we began our investigation using the Reverse Image Search feature. Our search led us to the original version of the viral picture circulating online. This picture was initially posted on Simpsons Wiki back in 2018.

According to The Simpsons Wiki, the Twitter logo first appeared in an episode called "Bart Gets a 'Z'" in 2009. The claiming picture of an iPhone screen with the Twitter app is from the episode "Ned' n Edna's Blend Agenda," aired on May 13, 2012.

Furthermore, our investigation discovered that the original frame, as seen on the Simpsons Wiki and other sources, depicts an app icon resembling the older version of the "Safari" app icon.

On July 23, Elon Musk tweeted that he would stop using the "bird logo" and rebrand Twitter.

Shortly after the above tweet, Musk unveiled the new Twitter logo. The new logo features an "X" made of two intersecting lines. On July 24th, Twitter's CEO Linda Yaccarino confirmed the company's choice by tweeting the design with the caption: "X is here! Let's do this." (Source: The Guardian)

Furthermore, the 17-year-old social media platform is preparing to change its URL from twitter.com to x.com soon. When you type "x.com," it already redirects to the Twitter site.

In conclusion, while "The Simpsons" has made many accurate predictions over the years, the "X" logo is not one of them. The image that has been circulating online is altered.
